so as you all know, the little man decided to make an early appearance!
kelly and i got home from beth israel hospital on tuesday february 10th, but josh needs to stay a bit longer. kelly got discharged yesterday (monday) but the hospital offers parents an extra night in a "parent room" if their baby needs to stay a little while longer. still not sure how long josh will need to say but he is getting better. he is a good size for being 5 weeks early (5 pounds, 6 ounces, 18 inches long) so they are just watching his breathing for a while. he is doing fine but they just want to keep him on some oxygen until he can handle things on his own. they did not need to intubate him (tube down his throat)...just a little air/oxygen up his nose (called CPAP - continuous positive airway pressure) to help his lungs expand. he is eating full size meals of breast milk every 4 hours although through a tiny tube down his mouth.
here is the crazy timeline of his birth starting on friday night (february 6th):
friday, february 6th: 1030pm kelly was in the bathroom at home and thought she felt her water break (not a lot, but a little) so we called the doc and they suggested we go in to have it checked out.
we got to the hospital around 11 friday night. they checked her out and decided that her water didnt break and that she wasnt dilated (but cervix was "thinning").
saturday, february 7th: around 230am they tried to send us home. she wasnt having major contractions, water supposedly didnt break, and wasnt dilated. we got in the car to leave and she felt naseuas and crampy...so we went back upstairs. they gave her some IV fluid since they thought she may have been dehydrated and crampy because of that. at this point her "cramps" (obviously contractions now) are getting worse.
around 330am they checked her again and found she was 2cm dilated! this is when it starts to sink in that we are gonna have the baby. they offered her an epidural and she went for it.
at around 4am they checked her again and she is now 6cm. pretty quick. by 530 she was fully dilated and started the pushing. at 635am on saturday he came out. very fast! best part is that the baby shower was supposed to be on saturday. he didnt want the party to happen without him!
